John Thornton is the Dean of Students and is responsible for all aspects of student discipline at ISE. John currently serves as a teacher of Mathematics and Design at ISE. Originally from South London, he took a B.Ed (4year teaching degree) in Maths and Art from the University of Hull and taught for four years in the UK before departing to Africa. He then spent the next 26 years teaching Maths, Art and Technical Drawing in State and private schools across Southern and Central Africa. During this period he took time out for a modular M.Ed from Bristol University.

His first spell at ISE started in 2001, but returned after a break teaching in the UK during 2005/6. Mr. Thornton taught Maths in the MYP and Diploma levels and developed our in house programme when we left the former programme. He has been board member a number of times during his time at ISE and has sat on various committees, including those for assessment and finance. Throughout his career he has created whole school timetables and has continued to use these skills at ISE. His hobbies include minor addictions to Sudoku and Bridge, but a significant passion for Military history and its associated technologies.
