Dog-Assisted Reading Program: Building Confidence and Skills in a Unique Way

The Dog-Assisted Reading Program is a carefully designed, goal-oriented intervention aimed at supporting English acquisition learners (EAL) as they develop their reading fluency, comprehension, and confidence. By creating a safe and supportive environment, the program removes the pressure often associated with traditional reading exercises—the dog, Rumi, listens attentively without judgment, providing comfort and motivation to the readers.

The program is delivered by a certified Therapy Dog Team, consisting of Ms. Kadri, the experienced handler, and Rumi, a licensed therapy dog from the Estonian Association of Assistance and Therapy Dogs (EATKÜ). Together, they create an engaging and encouraging atmosphere for learners to explore reading at their own pace.

As part of this innovative initiative, students get the opportunity to interact with Rumi and practice reading one-on-one. Each participant chooses books based on their personal interests, fostering a sense of ownership and enthusiasm for learning. Rumi listens calmly, while Ms. Kadri provides guidance and ensures that the intervention aligns with the student’s individual goals.

Learning objectives are set according to WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment) English Language Development Standards, ensuring a structured and measurable approach to language acquisition. Through this unique program, students not only improve their language skills but also gain confidence, emotional support, and a lifelong love for reading and care for animals.

The Dog-Assisted Reading Program is a testament to ISE’s commitment to fostering a holistic, student-centered learning environment that meets the diverse needs of its community.
