Frequently Asked Questions about ISE

What is ISE?

The International School of Estonia (ISE) is a non-profit school providing an International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum for children in Estonia. It’s accredited by NEASC, CIS, and authorized by IBO. Fore more, see the About page on this website.

What curriculum does ISE teach?

ISE uses the IB curriculum, delivered through the PYP (pre-school to grade 5), MYP (grades 6-10), and DP (grades 11-12). Students can earn an IB Diploma or ISE’s High School Diploma recognized by NEASC.

What’s the teaching like?

ISE uses inquiry-based learning, where students work with teachers to find answers to important questions. It focuses on concepts, not memorization. Teachers plan lessons based on the IB framework, considering the school’s context.

How is this different from traditional education?

● Less teacher instruction, more student-driven learning
● Fewer pre-set questions, more opportunities for student inquiry
● More emphasis on understanding concepts than memorizing facts
● Research, summarizing, and synthesizing information are emphasized
● Students take more responsibility for their learning

What might my child notice?

● Less homework, especially in PYP grades
● More independence expected
● More questions than answers in class
● Diverse classmates speaking different languages

What’s the school community like?

ISE has a small, close-knit community that encourages parental involvement. The US Embassy has a close relationship with ISE.

How can I get help?

Talk to your child’s teacher first. If the issue persists, speak to the Principal/Coordinator for your child’s program (PYP, MYP, or DP). Finally, you can meet with the Director who maintains a very open-door approach.

Where can I get more information?

The Student and Parent Handbook or the present school website. You can also contact the school office at +372 666 4380 or office@ise.edu.ee.
